Garden-worthy Grasses and Grass-like Plants for the Garden with Carol Bornstein

We eat them, drink them, build with them, and play on them. In this presentation, the emphasis will be on the ornamental value of grasses and grass-like plants. With a wide array of colors, textures, and sizes to choose from, California’s native grasses have much to offer gardeners. Some of the most desirable species will be featured in this walk around the botanic garden, showcasing the many ways that they bring beauty, movement, seasonality, and wildlife habitat to our gardens.

Comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended for this outdoor class. Although the Garden is dog-friendly, only service animals are permitted at this Garden classes (or event).

About Carol Bornstein:

Carol Bornstein is former Director of the Nature Gardens, a constructed habitat for urban wildlife at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. For nearly 30 years, she was horticulturist at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, where she managed the living collections, retail nursery, and plant introduction program. She co-authored the award-winning book, “California Native Plants for the Garden” and “Reimagining the California Lawn: Water-conserving Plants, Practices, and Designs.” In addition to tending her own garden, Carol continues to advocate for sustainable, regionally appropriate landscapes in harmony with nature and to share her knowledge of plants native to California and other Mediterranean climate regions through teaching, writing, consulting, and garden design work.
