Dieter Wilken, Ph.D.

Dieter spends time in the Clifton Smith Herbarium assisting database and imaging efforts and completing taxonomic treatments for the “Flora of North America.”

Dieter Wilken, Ph.D., retired as director of research and conservation in 2013 after 20 years of service at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Before coming to the Garden, Dieter was a professor at Colorado State University and manager of “The Jepson Manual” project at University of California, Berkeley (1990 to 1993). He received his bachelor’s degree in botany from California State University, Los Angeles, and his doctorate from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Currently, he works as a research associate in the Clifton Smith Herbarium at the Garden assisting database and imaging efforts and completing taxonomic treatments for the “Flora of North America,” and he continues to serve as an emeritus member of the California Native Plant Society’s Rare Plant Program Committee.
