Elizabeth Kellam de Forest was a prominent Santa Barbara landscape architect and editor who helped shape the region’s horticultural identity. Alongside her husband, Lockwood de Forest Jr., she influenced the early vision of Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and co-founded The Santa Barbara Gardener magazine.
In the 1950s, her impact at the Garden deepened. As a Trustee from 1950 to 1985 and a key member of the Plantings and Grounds Committee, she played a hands-on role in shaping the landscape. Each week, she joined Garden leadership on walkthroughs, helping guide planting decisions, refine design, and “place” plants throughout the grounds. Known for her strong design sensibility and deep plant knowledge, she helped bring both structure and beauty to the Garden’s evolving identity.
She was officially licensed as a landscape architect in 1952, further solidifying her influence in the field and her role in advancing the appreciation of California native plants.
The Garden’s Dudleya display on the northeast side of the Meadow, planted in 1993, honors her lasting legacy.

Say hello to Mary Galindo, regional volunteer with @latinooutdoors and lead educator at @rootedsantabarbara Mary has a passion for connecting communities to nature, and now she is helping us grow the native plant movement!
Through hiking, birding, and community-led outdoor experiences, Mary discovered how native plants support wildlife, conserve water, and build climate resilience. Today, she is focused on creating welcoming, first experiences in nature. That might look like a neighborhood walk, noticing birds outside your window, or learning what “native” means for the first time.

Well, it was fun while it lasted...
While the Mission Creek Swim Club has officially been shut down (per management), Garden members still get free year-round admission, 10% off at the Shop and Nursery, guest passes to share, access to 345+ gardens nationwide, and a subscription to Ironwood magazine.
And the good news? Everyone’s welcome to come soak in the beauty of California native plants. No floaties required.
