The Garden invites you to join us for this unprecedented opportunity to visit the west end of Santa Cruz Island. This is a trip that is rarely offered to the public and we will be going to one of the most beautiful parts of the island. Participants can expect to see goldfields (Lasthenia gracilis), Santa Cruz Island liveforever (Dudlyea nesiotica), succulent lupine (Lupinus succulentus), San Miguel locoweed (Astragalus miguelensis), checker bloom (Sidalcea malviflora) and many more!
 
This incredible day trip will be led by island expert and Garden emeritus, Steve Junak and the Garden’s Living Collection Curator, Christina Varnava.

All ages are welcome, however, participants should be in good physical condition. Guests will land at Forney’s Cove via a skiff landing. We highly recommend that participants wear good hiking shoes and a hat and bring sunscreen/sunblock. Guests are advised to prepare to get wet and should bring extra clothing. There are no facilities at this location, therefore guests must bring water and food with them for their time on the island. Additional information with directions to the harbor and travel preparation will be sent to registered guests via email.

About the Instructors:

Steve Junak is the Garden’s Herbarium Curator emeritus, is an active researcher and expert on the flora of the islands of California and Baja California.  He holds an M.A. in botany, has led field trips for more than 25 years, and has co-authored several books on the Channel Islands. Look for Steve’s trips to the Channel Islands for unique botanical experiences.

Christina Varnava is the Living Collections Curator at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. She supports the Living Collection by acquiring new plants and manages a database with nearly a century of records on thousands of plants in the Living Collection. These records are the key to unlocking the unique stories of the plants in the Garden and they also support the vital research and conservation of California native plants.
