Over in Cuyama Valley, the team is turning a single plot of land into a living experiment.
As part of the Cuyama Homegrown project, nine subplots are set up to test a simple but important question: how does care shape what grows here?
Each plot receives the same water, but not the same treatment. Some are left alone. Some are planted. Others are planted and weeded.
By comparing these approaches, we’re starting to understand how small decisions, like whether or not to weed, can influence plant growth, pollinators, and the broader ecosystem.
This is research rooted in place, guided by observation, and built to support landscapes like this one for the long term.

In the 1970s, the Garden expanded its propagation capabilities with the addition of the lath house—then the central hub of horticultural work, in place of a traditional glasshouse.
These structures significantly increased the Garden’s ability to grow native plants at scale for both conservation and public distribution, laying the foundation for its long-term horticultural leadership.

Plant native plants.
Bush Poppy (Dendromecon rigida) is a fire-adapted, evergreen shrub native to California’s dry, rocky slopes, where it thrives in full sun and nutrient-poor soils. Known as a “fire follower,” it can resprout after disturbance, making it well-suited to dynamic, fire-prone ecosystems.
In the garden, this hardy shrub puts on a bright display of buttercup-yellow flowers from winter into spring, standing out against its narrow, gray-green foliage that provides year-round interest.
Habitat Perks: Its early-season blooms offer an important nectar source when fewer plants are flowering, supporting native pollinators emerging from winter.

Why do so many native plants have small leaves?
Christina Varnava, the Garden’s Living Collections Curator, shares how this simple trait tells a bigger story about adaptation. In dry climates like ours, smaller leaves help plants conserve water, reduce heat stress, and thrive with less.
Next time you’re in nature, take a closer look. Those small leaves are doing big work.
Under the direction of Dara E. Emery, the Garden`s first horticulturist and plant breeder, the Garden Growers volunteer group began propagating native plants and later began selling native plants to the public.
