A comprehensive, collaborative project to recover 14 listed plants on the Channel Islands
Project Dates
2017 - 2022Summary
Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is the lead institution on this large, collaborative grant focused on conservation and recovery of 14 listed plants on California’s Channel Islands. It includes a variety of actions for these species: 1) determine the current status and population trends for 13 species through census and demography (life stage) surveys; 2) collect seeds from 12 species for conservation seed banking; 3) use seed collections of six species to produce additional (bulk) seed and start several new populations per species; 4) outplant new populations of three species from container stock; 5) conduct a soil seed bank study for one species; 6) conduct pollination biology and seed germination studies for one species; and 7) conduct a population genomics study of one species to assess genetic diversity within and between islands.
