Planting with Purpose in Cuyama 🌱
What began as months of planning and collaboration turned into hands in the soil this fall. From partner site visits and plot design to planting more than 400 native plants and sowing seeds by hand, this work is rooted in patience, partnership, and listening to the land.
These first steps are already shaping what this place can become. Restoration takes time, but it starts with showing up together.

Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia) stands tall in the Mojave, with its sculptural branches, dagger-like leaves, and spring clusters of greenish-white blooms. It’s more than iconic it’s essential.
Joshua trees rely on one tiny partner, the Tegeticula moth, for pollination. In return, they shelter dozens of bird species and host the Yucca Giant-Skipper butterfly, making them a cornerstone of desert ecosystems.
While slow-growing and rarely used in residential gardens, they can be a dramatic focal point thriving in full sun, very low water, and fast-draining, elevated coarse soils.
At a glance:
• Size: 5–20 ft tall
• Water: Very low; monthly summer irrigation once established
• Cold tolerant: Down to –20°F
• Bloom: Spring
A true symbol of resilience, adapted to some of the toughest environments in the West.
Meet coyote brush (Baccharis pilularis), a hardworking California-native that earns its place in the garden. Tough, adaptable, and drought-tolerant, coyote brush is great for slopes, hedges, and habitat gardens.
Why we love it:
- Excellent for erosion control
- Provides shelter, nectar and pollen for native insects and birds
- Thrives in coastal conditions with minimal water once established
Garden adapted varieties like ‘Pigeon Point’ or ‘Twin Peaks’ provide a great groundcover solution.

Meet Elk Blue Rush (Juncus patens ‘Elk Blue) a plant that thrives where others won’t.
This evergreen rush adds clean lines and soft blue-green texture to any landscape, especially areas with consistent moisture or seasonal wet spots.
Why it stands out:
• Adaptable to almost any soil
• Great around water features and rain gardens
• Deer resistant and supports caterpillars and butterflies
• Fast-growing, upright, and easy to care for

• Size: 2–3 ft tall, 4–6 ft wide
• Light: Full sun to part shade
• Water: Moderate to high
Pair it with moisture-loving natives like mugwort, mulefat, sedges, or dogwood for a thriving, habitat-rich garden.
