Beatrix Farrand & Lockwood de Forest Jr.
In 1938, conversations began between renowned landscape architects Beatrix Farrand and Lockwood de Forest Jr. about the layout and design of the Garden.
Their collaboration helped shape the Garden as both a scientific institution and a beautifully composed landscape. Farrand, one of the most influential landscape architects of her time, believed native plants should be used artfully and intentionally.
De Forest brought a deep knowledge of California’s native flora and a vision for showcasing them in ways that supported both conservation and public education. Together, these visionary designers helped define the Garden’s identity as a place where conservation and design grow together.

Inside the Seed Bank: An insurance policy against extinction 🌱
The Seed Bank at the Garden protects some of California’s rarest and most endangered native plants.
Stored at -4°F in the Garden’s Pritzlaff Conservation Center, nearly 4 million seeds representing more than 400 species are preserved for future research and restoration efforts that support California’s biodiversity.

In the early 1930’s the Garden expanded with a new Information Kiosk designed and built by landscape architect Lockwood de Forest Jr., as well as fresh sections including the Forest Section, the Redwood Section, and the Ceanothus Section.
In 1939, the Garden separated from the Museum of Natural History and became an independent nonprofit organization carrying the new name Santa Barbara Botanic Garden.
