A comprehensive guide to the macrolichens of California

Project Dates

2022 - 2027

Summary

California is home to more than 600 species of macrolichens, many of which serve important ecosystem functions such as water and nutrient cycling, soil stabilization, and sheltering and feeding other organisms. Yet, the progress of lichenology in the state is impeded by the lack of a comprehensive and up-to-date identification guide to macrolichens. Our Santa Barbara Botanic Garden lichenologist is working to produce a comprehensive guide to California macrolichens that will include keys and color images of all macrolichens known to occur in the state. This project will benefit lichen research and conservation, and spark interest in lichenology for nature lovers in the general public.

Goals

To benefit lichen research, conservation, and education through a modern guide to California macrolichens
