Pressed: Botanical Art and The Herbarium

Centered on plants currently on view in The Garden’s Nursery and living collection, the show presents linocut prints of California native wildflowers that artist Henry Evans rendered in a botanically faithful yet distinctly personal manner.

These “plant portraits,” as Evans called them, are juxtaposed with their corresponding plant specimens from The Garden’s Herbarium. The resulting twelve pairs invite viewers to consider the parallels and connections between artistic and scientific processes. A reflection of The Garden’s own interdisciplinary nature, the exhibition also delves into the history of herbaria to explore how art and science have worked hand-in-hand since the Renaissance.
